THE WRIST MENISCUS: What Exactly Is It?

An injury to the wrist meniscus—known scientifically as the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC)—is one of the most common causes of wrist pain and can significantly limit the function of this delicate joint.

Today, we explore the topic with Dr. Molayem, Orthopedic Hand Surgeon at Arsbiomedica Clinic.

Is There Really a Meniscus in the Wrist?

Yes. The triangular fibrocartilage complex, often simply called the “meniscus,” is a group of structures located on the ulnar side of the wrist (the side of the little finger) that plays a crucial role in stabilizing the joint and absorbing stress.

Its injury may result from trauma—such as falling onto an outstretched hand or from racquet-based sports like padel—or from degenerative wear, typically due to an anatomical predisposition.

What Are the Symptoms?

In mild cases, patients may experience a vague discomfort in the wrist. In more severe conditions, the pain can become intense, accompanied by decreased grip strength and a feeling of instability. Symptoms are especially noticeable during movements involving rotation of the forearm.

How Is the Diagnosis Made?

A thorough evaluation by an orthopedic specialist is essential to suspect the lesion and understand its characteristics. Confirmation is then obtained through imaging, typically with an X-ray and an MRI scan.

What Does Treatment Involve?

For many of these injuries, the first approach is conservative: rest, medication, bracing, and physiotherapy can help reduce—or at least improve—the symptoms.

When symptoms do not improve, or when instability is present from the outset, surgery becomes necessary. Depending on the type of lesion, the procedure may involve smoothing the damaged tissue or reattaching the “meniscus,” with additional steps performed as required by the patient’s specific condition.

The surgery is carried out as a day-hospital procedure, using anesthesia limited to the upper limb.
Postoperative care includes dressing changes and a tailored rehabilitation protocol, essential for optimizing the outcome of the surgery.

At Arsbiomedica Clinic, thanks to a specialized team and a personalized care pathway, patients are supported before, during, and after the surgical procedure to ensure the most effective recovery possible.
