Desiring a change or wishing to correct a physical imperfection is a deeply personal journey. It requires careful consideration, accurate information, and, above all, choosing professionals of proven authority. When it comes to breast plastic surgery, patients’ concerns are frequently centered on safety, the choice of treatments, and the pursuit of natural-looking results.
To shed light on modern plastic surgery techniques and explore how the approach to these procedures is evolving, we interviewed Prof. Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo. He is a Full Professor of Plastic Surgery at Sapienza University of Rome, a member of the National Board of Health (Consiglio Superiore di Sanità), and the leading Plastic Surgeon at Arsbiomedica.
From the Culture of Volume to the Harmony of Form: The Evolution of Breast Plastic Surgery
Prof. Santanelli, the medical field is changing rapidly. What is the most significant evolution currently taking place in breast procedures?
“Breast plastic surgery is undergoing a profound transformation. While general preference and attention were once almost entirely focused on volume and the sheer size of the outcome, today the paradigm has shifted: the core objective is to restore harmonious form. We are moving toward surgery that is tailored to the unique characteristics of each patient and, above all, highly respectful of anatomical structures. This approach does more than just ensure natural aesthetics; it is essential for establishing a healthy, long-lasting balance that directly and positively impacts the recovery of a woman’s quality of life.”
Does this mean that modern plastic surgery techniques are not a one-size-fits-all solution for every woman?
“Exactly. There is no universal technique. Because we are advancing toward personalized medicine, every woman has a path best suited to her specific anatomy and expectations. Depending on the imperfection to be corrected, the right choice may sometimes be breast implants via classic augmentation mammoplasty. Other times, a breast lift (mastopexy) is necessary to reduce excess skin. Frequently, the best approach is a combined one: we pair alloplastic materials, such as implants, with the patient’s own autologous tissue.”
Innovation and Implant Safety: Preserving Tissue for Patient Comfort
What technological and methodological innovations are truly improving the patient experience?
“The most significant innovations are those aimed at increasing safety, comfort, and the overall quality of the outcome. Today, we utilize methodologies that are far more tissue-preserving. By minimizing surgical trauma, we substantially improve the post-operative phase. This translates to optimal preservation of breast sensitivity and a much faster return to daily activities. Materials have also undergone an important evolution: modern implants are designed to be biologically superior, inherently making surgeries safer, more reliable, and stable over the long term.”
Choosing a Plastic Surgeon: Expert Advice
What fundamental advice would you give to a woman considering a breast procedure?
“The essential piece of advice is to remember that the procedure does not begin in the operating room, but during the very first medical consultation. That is when the foundation for therapeutic success is laid. For this reason, choosing a surgeon must be a highly deliberate process, because it is upon mutual trust that the surgical strategy will be planned.”
What criteria do you suggest evaluating to verify a professional’s credibility?
“It is vital to rely on specialists who possess a solid and transparent track record. An excellent indicator of safety is affiliation with accredited national scientific societies. For our specialty, it is fundamental that the physician is a member of SICPRE (Società Italiana di Chirurgia Plastica Ricostruttiva ed Estetica). Selecting a professional recognized by these associations is the first step toward making a safe, informed, and protected choice.”
