tac con o senza contrasto

Has your doctor prescribed a CT scan with or without contrast? Here is everything you need to know about preparation and patient safety.

When your primary care physician or a specialist orders a Computed Tomography (CT) scan, it is completely natural to have questions about the specific procedure indicated on your prescription. Whether it is for an oncology follow-up, a vascular issue, or an orthopedic evaluation, understanding why a CT scan has been prescribed—with or without contrast medium—helps you approach the exam with complete peace of mind and confidence.

To answer the most common questions regarding prep, safety, and clinical indications, we spoke with Dr. Giulio Vallati, Head of Diagnostic Imaging at Clinica Arsbiomedica in North Rome.

Dr. Vallati, why does a doctor prescribe a CT scan with or without contrast?

“The choice depends entirely on the clinical question at hand. A unenhanced (or non-contrast) CT scan relies solely on ionizing radiation and is the gold standard for evaluating bone structures, trauma, kidney stones, or lung lesions. On the other hand, a CT scan with iodinated contrast is prescribed when it is essential to highlight blood vessels and tissue vascularization. It is crucial for evaluating oncological lesions, complex inflammatory conditions, vascular diseases, or performing specialized procedures such as Cardiac CT angiography.”

What preparation is required prior to the exam?

“No special precautions are needed for a CT scan without contrast. However, if your doctor has prescribed a contrast-enhanced scan, we ask patients to get a simple blood test beforehand to check kidney function (e.g., creatinine levels) and to fast for at least 6 hours prior to the procedure.”

Data and numbers backing precision diagnostics

Over 6 million CT scans are performed every year in Italy. Technological advancements in radiological equipment have revolutionized the field. At Clinica Arsbiomedica’s diagnostic center in North Rome, we utilize a 512-slice multi-detector CT scanner equipped with an automated dose reduction system. This technology delivers ultra-high-definition images and 3D reconstructions while minimizing radiation exposure to safeguard patient health.

Patient priorities: Safety, comfort, and clarity

Receiving a prescription for a contrast-enhanced CT scan can naturally raise concerns about radiation dose or the safety of the contrast agent. To address these worries, our radiology team conducts a thorough pre-exam medical history review and guides every patient step-by-step—ensuring personal comfort, clear explanations of every step, and rapid turnarounds for diagnostic reports.
